The National Center for Financial Research at Peking University

The National Center for Financial Research, a new research institute and high-end think tank, has been recently established by Peking University, thanks to the generous donation of Zhongzhi Group. As an open research platform with global perspectives, the Center aims to apply world-class academic research to financial practices in China, to achieve its goals of addressing major financial issues facing the country and society, building a solid analytical foundation for financial reform, offering policy analysis for financial policy-making and regulation, and supplying creative ideas and technology for the construction and development of the Chinese financial market.

Adhering to an independent and open scientific approach, the Center integrates the resources of top universities, think tanks, non-profit and for-profit organizations, both within China and beyond. We strive to facilitate and promote intellectual exchange and interdisciplinary development in finance, and provide opportunities for closer interactions and collaborations among our members and affiliates. The Center’s research team consists of renowned scholars, practitioners, and policy makers who command not only in-depth understanding of the Chinese market, but also global perspectives and a deep knowledge of financial theory, policy and practice.

The Center creates value mainly through publishing influential academic research, insightful policy research, and undertaking various major research projects. Concurrently, the Center regularly organizes forums, seminars and other events, in order to provide an open and international platform for the innovative and intellectual exchange among various parties involved and interested in the development and reform of Chinese financial markets.

As a research institute reporting directly to the university, the Center comprises an advisory committee, an academic committee and a council. The advisory committee is jointly headed by Nobel Prize laureate, Professor Robert Merton from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Professor Li Yining, the Honorary Dean of Guanghua School of Management. The Director of the Center is Professor Jin Li, Chair Professor of Peking University Guanghua School of Management and Co-Chairman of its Financial Department, and Professor of Oxford University Said Business School.

Along with the rapidly growing Chinese economy, China’s financial system has achieved enormous progress, but it is also facing immense challenges. One of the most important national development strategic goals is to deepen the reform in the financial sector and to establish a modern financial system. The Center, founded at this crucial historic moment, will carry forward the academic tradition of Peking University, and hold as its mission to promote the transformation and development of the Chinese financial sector.
